80. THE HOLY TRINITY OBELISK (OF THE PLAGUE) Timişorii Avenue

It is also called “The Column of the Vow”. This latter name refers to the decision made by the Roman-Catholic citizens from Aradul Nou (i.e. The New Arad, a district in the city); they had said that after the cholera epidemia between 1732-1738 would vanish, they would erect a column of the Holy Trinity, with its own altar, as a thanksgiving that they survived the plague. It was made in 1745 and one year later it would be placed in front of the edifice of the former city hall of Arad, in today’s Avram Iancu Square. In 1882 it was moved on the other side of the Mureş River, in Aradul Nou, on the right side of Timişorii Avenue on the way towards the city exit, where it still is today.
